CelloFellos

Global Grooves

The two cellists Leonard Disselhorst and Bryan Cheng are united by their desire to transcend the boundaries of traditional classical literature; after decades of concert experience and national and international tours as solo and chamber musicians, they decided in 2020 to subsequently also work together as a duo. As the CelloFellos, they immerse themselves in the worlds of jazz, tango, folk and other genres. All pieces are arrangements by their own hand, and with their program "Global Grooves", they span a range from traditional Romanian folk dances to ragtime and swing, going all the way to newly-composed contemporary pop.

The CelloFellos perform at renowned festivals such as the Heidelberg Spring, Beethovenfest Bonn, and Lavaux Classic (Switzerland) and in concert halls such as the Tonali Hall in Hamburg or the chamber music hall of the Berlin Philharmonic.

"The concert concluded with a trip to the Balkans, featuring melodies from Hungary, Romania, and Serbia that sounded especially groovy thanks to distinctive playing techniques. Prolonged applause and standing ovations in the sold-out Kreuzkirche confirmed (Steven) Walter’s successful concept for the ‘Feierabend’ concert."

 General Anzeiger

"In the ‘Medley sur des thèmes roumains’, the strummed chord accompaniment sounded like the driving guitar of a traditional Romanian music group.
The appeal is strong to reach out beyond the classical repertoire in search of new sounds. Cheng and Disselhorst, with their program ‘Global Grooves’, plunged wholeheartedly into distant worlds: Tango Nuevo, swing, and folklore."

Rheinische Post

"Through electric amplification, a certain roughness is added to the cello’s warm sound, giving it urban and industrial facets that enhance its club appeal. (…) The CelloFellos possess outstanding technique and infectious joy in playing, which creates a unique kind of drive. (…) — Cheers and applause in the sold-out Schlachthof."
